The Colorado Springs City Council has unanimously voted to dissolve the Law Enforcement Transparency and Advisory Commission (LETAC), concluding its nearly six-year tenure. Established in 2020 amid national calls for police reform, LETAC aimed to strengthen trust between the police department and the community by providing citizen input on law enforcement practices.
The decision to disband LETAC was finalized on April 29, 2026, following an earlier unanimous vote on April 14 to advance the ordinance for dissolution. Councilmembers cited various reasons for the move, including concerns about the commission’s effectiveness and the desire to explore alternative methods for community engagement and oversight.
Community reactions have been mixed. Some residents expressed disappointment, emphasizing the importance of civilian oversight in maintaining transparency and accountability within the police department. Others supported the council’s decision, believing that new approaches could more effectively address community concerns and foster trust.
As of now, the City Council has not announced specific plans to replace LETAC. Discussions are expected to continue regarding the best strategies to ensure ongoing dialogue between law enforcement and the community, with a focus on enhancing public safety and trust.
